Classic Sauvignon Blanc

If you are not too sure what to expect from a Sauvignon Blanc in this style, think chic and reserved and you’ll be heading in the right direction!

What To Expect

Classic Sauvignons are dry wines often with a good dose of minerality that, although they are not fruit-driven, have all the flavour characteristics people normally associate with a Sauvignon Blanc; the grassy, herbal aromas followed by flavours of gooseberry and asparagus on the palate.

Classic Sauvignon Regions

For this style you will tend to focus on French wine regions such as Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, which are best known for producing this style of wine. There are also other places within Loire and southern France making this style of wine, and even in New Zealand some people are turning to a more classic style too. Although the focus here is obviously on Sauvignon Blanc, there are some Chenin Blancs in South Africa that have gone for this style too.

Food Match

This style of wine works great as an aperitif, but is an obvious choice for fish, as well as being a good match for goats’ cheese.

If you like the slightly fruity side of Classic Sauvignon Blanc, you will probably like the Kiwi style which tends to be a bit punchier and more “in your face” than the Classic styles.
